  • The O'Suzee Factor

    ....with apologies to Bill O'Reilly....

    o_reilly_doing_it_wrong

My husband is mowing the lawn.  One last time (we said that the LAST time).  He thinks it is above and beyond the call of duty to cut grass on November 28 in insulated coveralls.  For going above and beyond the call of duty to make me happy, he is a patriot, not a pinhead.

Youngest Daughter helped me clean.  Now she is cleaning out and organizing my pantry cupboard which was, well, in mighty disarray.  For this industrious spirit, she is also a patriot, not a pinhead.

I followed a car home from work yesterday afternoon that went 45 miles an hour the whole way from Milford to Harrington.  For this blatant disregard of the line of cars behind it and the posted speed limit, it is a big fat PINHEAD.

    Amen.

Word of the Day:  When posting a comment do not be pugnacious.

    DRESSING, FILLING, STUFFING....

We gathered with my side of the family at the home of my baby sister today for a wonderful feast spread upon a groaning table.  I blink owlishly in my turkey stupor as I prepare to post a post.

My two sisters tending last minute details...

We brought along the mother of Main Squeeze since she had nowhere else to be today.  This is she in the blue and my mama in the brown.

The under 30's sat at one end of the table...

Those who have reached maturity at the other.

Tia, the Golden Retreiver puppy thought that it would be so grand if somebody would just please come out and toss a little stinky gross toy around with her for awhile.  All these people and nobody to play with!

    S5300024.JPG

Granny Paige, a friend my sister brought along from upstate, LOVES dogs.  She paid Tia some attention.

    S5300026.JPG

I've never really posted about my sister's wonderful home.  They bought a big beautiful Victorian in Milford, the town where I work.

It was built in 1850.  (I think that's right.)

    S5300025.JPG

They have done a lot of work on it in the last year.  It has so many cool nooks and crannies inside.  I love it.

Sorry about the flash.  I liked the pic I took without a flash even less than this one.

..and from the kitchen side.  Very handy indeed.

Original glass in this back door.  Notice the etching.

    S5300040.JPG

The chimneys are all in very poor repair, so in spite of three beautiful fireplaces, they heat with a wood stove.  That can be challanging with the very high ceilings.

Ukrainian "artifacts" that remind them of "home."  (They spent 12 years there.)

    S5300038.JPG

The house did not have a modern kitchen.  It was Youngest Son's delight and joy to build them one.

    S5300033.JPG

    S5300034.JPG

I love the pantry and its pansy theme.

    S5300007.JPG

Some of the young adults and their significant others had to leave for other family feasts.  The ones that were left played a game.  The "adult ladies" started a puzzle, but I forgot to take a picture.  The gentlemen went on a manly walk up and down the River Walk just outside the back door.  All too soon it was time to go home.

    S5300028.JPG

Thanks PJ & Mel, it was a really nice family time!

    S5300013.JPG

Youngest Daughter was our only child there.  All the others were otherwise engaged with their other families. It seemed odd without any little kidlets underfoot.  We get to do it all over again on Sunday when all our kids come home.  There will be plenty of small fry then.  Yay!

  • Feast or Famine....

....that's what you get with me and this blog...you feast for a few days in a row...then silence for weeks.  There will likely be silence after today for at least the rest of the week since I will barely be home at all.  For for now, feast upon this...

The view outside my front door...gray, rainy, dreary...

    S5300004

    It calls for this...

    S5300006.JPG

    S5300003.JPG

...and this...(altho' husband lifted the lid and took one look saying in a doubtful tone, "I sure hope this tastes better than it looks!")  It's a lentil casserole type thing.  I'm making homemade bread to go with it, so maybe we can choke it down.

    S5300005.JPG

The other day was Poetry Contest Recitation Day at Cole's school.  Here he is saying his adorable poem in front of what must have seemed (to him) a huge audience all up on the bleachers as we were.  He was a little afraid at first, but he conquered that and did great.  He won first place in Kindergarten.  Finally all that drama producing a ribbon!

    S5300030.JPG

Here is his baby sister Carli with her beautiful blueberry eyes.

    S5300027.JPG

Cole brought along his special friend who watched from the safety of mommy's bag as he said his poem.

    S5300026.JPG

That was last week.  This week, Cole and Carli and Ellie and Mommy are all sick.  I went over there for a little while around lunch time and fed the munchkins, cleaned up the kitchen, and sorted and started laundry.  The kids all have coughs and runny noses, and poor Second Daughter was prone on the couch.  If she has the swine flu I just prescribe lots of oinkment.

Charlie was on his way home so I left them in good hands.

Looks like it'll be a cozy evening at home.  I like that.

  • A New Halleujah...

Michael W. Smith is one of my all time favorite singers.  He is Oldest Daughter's definite all time favorite.  Edwin played MWS music in the background when he proposed.   This is how powerfully she is affected by Smitty's music you see. MW came to Salisbury, MD, which is about an hour from here, and we got tickets to go.  He's just released a new album called "A New Halleujah"  that is the title of his tour as well.  Oldest Daughter had seats way up front.  We, on the other hand, well, did not.  So most of these are her photos, altho' some I stole from Diana's Facebook.  Thanks Diana.  heh.  It was noised abroad that Smitty wanted a choir of local young people to sing back up for him during the show and this was the reaction of youngest daughter and her friends:

    smitty15.jpg

So they found out the wherefores and how to's and gathered together and commenced to proceed to apply to be in the choir.  Here's some of them with their director.

    smitty13.jpg

And here's some of them with Michael W Smith:

    smitty14.jpg

It really was very cool and probably a once in a lifetime experience for Youngest Daughter to sing backup for someone who has the ear and friendship of Presidents.  He is so down to earth and humble.  Has such a heart for and love for God and worshipping him.

This last pic was the only one that I took that even remotely turned out.  I actually kind of like it. It was taken from the, errr... nosebleed section.

It was an awesome concert.  Go if he comes anywhere near you!

  • YOU'RE ONLY 18 ONCE...

(I got a nudge today from Amazing Amanda that I have not updated here for way too long.  I agree.  Facebook is so much easier.  Just a sentence and you're done.  But I still like xanga better over all, it just takes more time.  So, for all of you that were just longing to hear from me, here goes.)

Back almost a month ago, Youngest Daughter turned 18.  Yes.  Our children are now all officially "adults."  Then she wrote THIS on her Facebook page...."hooray for being able to: vote, buy cigarettes, go to REGULAR jail, and being able to buy lottery tickets!"  MmmmHmmmmm  Isn't she cute.  Think we still have a lil' work to do?

Eighteen is a very important birthday, obviously, for all the above reasons and more.  It cannot go uncelebrated.  Amazing Amanda and Ravishing Ruth put their heads together and came up with a Surprise Plan.

Just look at this.  Consider the results of the two of them coming up with a plan.  Oh me!

    marla16

The plan was this:  All of us would dress up like we were going to the Kentucky Derby, surprise Marla, and take her around town in Seaford on a scavernger hunt, gathering pre-deposited wrapped gifts at various and sundry businesses.  The surprise part happened by the hair of our chinny chin chins.  There was a funeral at our church that evening.  Oldest Daughter was in charge of the meal.  I was helping with clean up.  We were supposed to meet at Ravishing's house before Youngest Daughter got there at 6:15.  Oldest Daughter and I got "parked in" at the church.  I have never seen the parking lot so full.  They were parking all up and down the road as well.  We barely got out.  We were late.  Amazing was wringing her hands in dread that all would be ruined.  It wasn't.  With five minutes to spare.  Whew!

Teary eyed and in shock, Youngest Daughter reads the first clue...

    marla2.jpg

First stop, Dairy Queen...and yes!!...we all went in with her.  Every time.  We're just supportive that way.

Each package contained another piece to her ensemble.  The dress was first.

    marla3.jpg

Subway inside Walmart...oh did we get some looks!  We sang "Happy Birthday" loudly on the way out.  Just to explain what we were doing you know.

    marla1.jpg

    marla4.jpg

    Walgreens....

    marla5.jpg

Oldest Daughter made a purchase...the clerk here was not amused.  Party pooper.

    marla6.jpg

Texas Roadhouse...with her boss, Jeff...she had to ride the birthday saddle while all her coworkers sang to her.  It was a truly embarrassing and wonderful moment.  (Embarrassing for her, wonderful for us.)

    marla7.jpg

On to the last stop:  Lowe's.

My three daughters.  I'm so proud.

    marla8.jpg

On to the flooring and tile dept....

    marla9.jpg

"Do you have a gift for me, good sir?"

"Why yes!  And I'll sing happy birthday to you and take a picture of your high class family too!"

    marla10.jpg

    marla11.jpg

But that was not all, no...no, that was not all.  We went back to Ravishing Ruth's abode where Youngest Daughters two older brothers had been setting out all her favorite Chinese delicacies.  (What was the connection between the Kentucky Derby attire and Chinese delicacies, you may ask?  None.)

    marla12.jpg

Amazing Amanda decorated with an idea from a picture she got in a magazine.  Beautiful!  She did the lion's share of the work for this event and my purple church-lady hat is off to her! I also stole all these pictures from her Facebook.  I had all I could do that night to get my giant purple self in and out of the vehicle without trying to take pictures yet! Thanks 'Manda!

    marla13.jpg

    marla14.jpg

    marla15.jpg

Happy, Happy Birthday Marla!  We wouldn't make fools of ourselves for just ANYBODY you know!
